Would you like to learn ways to increase your performance at work?

The Top 4 P's in the Workplace

The very first time I came across the 4 P’s was during high school while taking Business Studies as a subject choice in the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) program in Great Britain, which I knew at the time as Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. These four elements define ways to help businesses effectively market their product and reach their target audience.

I recently focused a great deal on productivity, which led me to think about the 4 P’s. How brilliant this framework is! Of course, all credits go to marketing professor and author E. Jerome McCarthy, who introduced this concept in 1960 in his book, Basic Marketing: A Managerial Approach.

I found McCarthy’s framework brilliant because if marketing is done right, sales would increase, which would subsequently lead to more productivity. As demand rises for products, so would the demand for efficient management and increased labour.

It may sound farfetched, so bear with me and hear me out!

I need to adopt a framework similar to E. Jerome McCarthy’s to increase my productivity and performance. So, I came up with my unique 4 P’s performance framework™. Since its inception, I have been feeling really great about my ability to tackle all challenging tasks with ease, joy, and freedom.

What are the top 4 P’s for me? Present, Participate, Proactive, and Productive.

I engage with these four elements both at home and in the workplace. My 4 P’s performance framework™ keeps me in check, allowing me to create space to truly be in the present moment.

• Being Present

Being present means noticing or being aware of the present moment. It can consist of caring for my needs or putting myself in a specific frame of mind. For instance, I might cultivate curiosity when preparing to teach a workshop. Curiosity opens up opportunities to connect with my participants and learn from them.

Participate

Participation demonstrates engagement and contribution. By taking on an active role, I contribute to others by sharing my work or ideas. Participation opens up opportunities for learning and discovery, and we never know whose lives we may touch by sharing our ideas with others.

• Being Proactive

Planning ahead for the day, week, or month helps me stay organized. I can arrange and sort tasks as they come, allowing for flexibility and adaptability. By being proactive, I create space for peace and healthy boundaries, enabling me to effectively and efficiently communicate and collaborate with others. Naturally, being proactive then sets the stage for greater productivity.

• Being Productive

In the zone of productivity, there is no space for procrastination. By applying all three elements — being present, participating, and being proactive — I am entirely immersed in the moment of production. I complete tasks, execute commitments, and accomplish goals I set for the day, week, or month. I am fully in action.

When my clients and I adopt this 4 P’s performance framework™ at home and in the workplace, I consider this as working performance. We have intentionally performed. With this intentionality, we have trained our muscles to strengthen, constantly developing ourselves personally and professionally.

My hope is that sharing my 4 P’s performance framework™ will bring you ease, joy, and freedom in your work performance this week and in the many weeks to come.

Till next time…

Find your flow. Find your freedom.
