Overwhelmed During the Holidays? 7 Tips to Beat Stress
We are approaching the second week of December, and there is still time today to plan ahead.
While it may be true that this can be a stressful time as we are approaching the holiday, much of the stress and anxiety comes from our own expectations.
It may even be worthwhile to explore where these expectations are coming from. Knowing where they come from can help you let go and start doing what works for you, so that you can enjoy the holiday. After all, it is unrealistic to fit more than what is necessary into your schedule.
So, here are 7 Tips That Will Help You Overcome Holiday Stress
- Set Realistic Expectations:
- It is okay to be imperfect. Allow yourself to be human. Rather than striving for perfection, work on being present and embrace meaningful moments.
- Be courageous in sharing your needs with family and friends and make requests when necessary to manage commitments effectively.
- Budgeting:
- Set aside a holiday budget that works for you and stick to it. Doing so will bring a sense of freedom as you honour your commitment and intention. Once you begin practising sticking to a budget, you’ll find it easier to apply this discipline to other areas of your finances. This practice marks the beginning of building wealth.
- Perhaps opt for creative, low-cost gift ideas or experiences instead of material goods.
- Time Management:
- Work on what’s most important first, and especially during the holiday season, shift your attention to what brings you the most joy and aligns with your values.
- Consider delegating tasks or sharing responsibilities with famiy members or friends. Doing so not only eases your burden but also builds trust and strengthens relationships with yourself and others.
- Self-Care:
- Make time for relaxation and gentle exercises like yoga or stretching.
Get adequate sleep. Depending on what your body needs, this could be anywhere between six and nine hours.
- Do some meditation, or breathing exercises to stay grounded— with only 5-10 minutes a day can help set intentions and bring clarity to your day.
- Connection:
- Connect with a family member or friend to spend quality time—enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, watch a show, or take a walk together.
- Alternatively, if you enjoy group activities, you might consider volunteering at a local church or lending a hand at a food kitchen.
- Healthy Habits:
- Focus on getting plenty of sleep.
- Limit your intake of alcohol and pop (for Canadians), soda (for Americans) or soft drinks (for British or Australians).
This sort of drinks can affect hormonal imbalance and subsequently, disrupt your metabolism.
- Make walking a regular habit. Frequent walks help release any unwanted energy, improve blood flow as well as focus and clarity.
- Professional Support:
- Make an appointment to talk to a therapist or a counsellor when you’re feeling down or anxious. A professional may offer relief and perspective.
- If you’re feeling stuck or if you are struggling to move forward in life, consider working with a life coach. A life coach can give guidance and support, and equip you with tools to help you gain clarity and progress toward your personal and professional goals.
This week, start by incorporating a few of the seven tips into your daily routine.
Gradually build on them over the coming weeks so that by the time the holiday season arrives, you’ll feel calm, prepared, and ready to embrace a joyful, stress-free experience.
