Over 40? Here's What Recruiters Won't Tell You
Have you been struggling to find work or get hired after 40?
Here's what I want to share about age or whether age is a factor to your not getting work. I'm going to share first my personal story.
I was self-employed for seven years... so out of the workforce for 7 years. I had my own business and I was also a distributor for another company; but still, it's considered self-employed and it's not the same as being in an actual workforce where you're hired as a as an employee.
And one night, I saw this job posting that really resonated with me and I knew right away it's something that I would want to do and that I would enjoy this work. So, I applied.
To my surprise, the very next morning, I was invited to go for an interview that same week. Long story short, I got the job. Now, by the time I got hired to teach and coach in this organization, I was already 50 years old. So no, I would say age is not the factor. What's most important is, that you have the skills and you have the talents and you have the work experience. All of that combined are yours to keep; and no one can take any of part of it away from you... unless you let them.
Another thing you most definitely don't want is having your age get in the way of the hiring process. I've had clients telling me, "I can't get work, because I'm in my 40s." What they're telling me is that they're too old.
On the flip side, however, I've also had clients that are much younger, saying that they have only 5 years of work experience in the industry they are in.
Now, my clients are skilled professionals, which, naturally, they have already had at minimum of 5 years of experience on the job to pursue their goal employment. And what they are trying to tell me is that, they are not getting hired because they might be too young.
Here, when I say skilled professionals, we're dealing with people that have put a lot of themselves -- their time and effort -- into their education and practice. Any practice, training, or apprenticeship experience gained are still part of the work experience, even before they're exposed to being hired. A lot of time and money and effort can be spent on your work and on your education. Therefore, it's crucial that you don't discredit any of the valuable learning and training experience you've taken part in.
At the end of the day, such things are important. They help contribute to the companies and our economy, because having different types of skilled work is important; hence the skilled professionals are needed. So I have heard it all -- from both sides -- the young and the old.
No matter the age; when an individual is not being hired, automatically it has to do with age -- too young or too old. Imagine how confused I could become, by what I've been told -- that you are not being hired due to your age. If I got confused by what has been put in my headspace, then how would your interviewer feel?
If age wasn't in their headspace at first, it certainly will be by the end of the interview. Why? Because your limiting belief about age is in the way of you getting hired. That limiting belief is now projected onto the interviewer. Furthermore, your limiting belief about age has slowly chipped away at your confidence.
Whether you believe you're too old or too young, age has caused you to feel less secure in yourself. And when you lack confidence or feel insecure, it undermines your talents, skills, and experience. Without realizing it, this belief has been quietly robbing you of confidence — not just during interviews, but even before the interviews, in how you approach job applications.
Remember, if you've been invited to a job interview, it's important not to undermine the confidence of the recruiter or hiring manager who handpicked your résumé.
They chose to meet with you because your résumé showed that you're qualified for the position they need to fill.
