What Will You Do to Turn Your Dreams Into Reality?

Lessons in Resilience and Success from Legendary Boxer Mike Tyson

Did anyone catch the massive live boxing event on Friday evening: the fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul on November 15th? I have to admit. I’m not typically a boxing fan. Yet, I found myself drawn to the screen as my family watched. More importantly, I had to see it because Mike Tyson is such an extraordinary fighter. At 58 years old, his willingness to take on this challenge is incredibly inspiring.

However, I’m not here to talk about the fight itself. What stood out to me was something Tyson said during his post-match interview with sports journalist Ariel Helwani. Helwani mentioned how he noticed Tyson was wearing a knee brace and asked if he had a knee injury and if that had affected his performance or contributed to the fight’s outcome. Tyson’s immediate response: “Well, I don’t want to use that as an excuse. If I did, I wouldn’t be in there.”

That response was very powerful. It was classy and exemplified the qualities that make Tyson a legendary fighter. His words reflected resilience, courage, commitment, willingness, drive, determination, patience, and a great deal of trust—trust in himself and the people who supported him in getting to that moment.

His response didn’t only elevate himself; it also honoured his opponent. It might have diminished Jake Paul’s victory if Tyson had blamed his knee. Instead, Tyson’s graciousness made both fighters look mentally and physically strong.

This moment taught me something profound. The excuses we make—often unconsciously—can undermine not only our own integrity but also that of others. By being mindful and taking responsibility for our words and actions, we create space for growth and learning for ourselves and those around us.

Although the fight might not have been as aggressive as some expected, there were valuable lessons in moments like Tyson’s interview.

At 58, Tyson has proved that age has nothing to do with what you want to pursue in life. It’s not about how old you are; it’s about what you’re mentally and physically capable of and what you’re willing to do to achieve your goals.

If there’s something you deeply want to pursue, what great strides are you willing to take to make it happen?

  • Are you willing to get a coach to help you develop a strong mindset?
  • Will you hire a trainer to build your physical fitness?
  • Could you work with a nutritionist to fuel your body healthily?

Whatever your goal, ask yourself: What steps are you ready to take to bring you to the next step, next level, and closer to your goal to make your dream a reality?

Take some time to reflect this week. What do you really want to achieve, and what bold actions will you take to get there?
