The Best Way to Celebrate Thanksgiving: Thank Yourself, Practice Gratitude, Self-Love, and Self-Care
First off, I want to wish everyone in Canada Happy Thanksgiving! It is indeed Thanksgiving weekend. We are so blessed to have this beautiful weather — sunny and warm! It reached up to 19ºC today.
It is amazing and rare for this time in October. It is usually rainy here in Vancouver and cool. We really need to give thanks for this perfectly dry, warm weather!
Since we’re on the topic of giving thanks, it often involves spending time with family, making dinner, and hosting or attending family gatherings.
Alternatively, you might be spending time with friends because your family is away.
However you choose to spend Thanksgiving, and as much as you may be looking forward to having some fun, relaxing times, you may experience some form of anxiety due to feelings of expectation or obligation, which is entirely normal.
While we are giving thanks and working hard on getting things done right — as in the way you want things to turn out – remember to give thanks to yourself.
It is important to use this time to thank yourself. Thanking yourself is a way for you to recharge and value yourself.
With so much happening during Thanksgiving, it is easy to lose yourself or forget about yourself, simply because you are always thinking about others and giving to others.
It can take a lot of time and energy to prepare for Thanksgiving.
This is even more true for those that are parents! Parents do so much to keep their family together. They’re essentially running a family.
My message to everyone is whether or not you are a parent, you deserve to be thanked.
Thanksgiving is also a time to honour self-love and self-care. So, while we are giving thanks to others, it’s equally important to give thanks to yourself.
Giving thanks to yourself is a way to nurture your mind and body. It is a way of honouring yourself. Think about all the things you have done. Acknowledge everything you have done.
I mean acknowledge everything and anything that you have done… if you completed a project recently, made an effort to go out to see friends, made a meal for yourself or others, did household chores, completed a list of tasks at work, made phone calls to connect with friends, read a book, read a page, wrote a few emails.
My point is, everything you have done warrants a mention by you.
Each thing you do has value.
You have value and you deserve abundance.
You can thank yourself by journaling, taking a long walk, treating yourself to a special coffee or tea, meditating, even reading a book for 10-15 minutes, taking a bath, lighting candles around you for 30 minutes, hugging a tree…
Or, doing breathing exercises and ending the breathing exercises by giving yourself a big hug!
Be sure to state your intention at the beginning of the Thanksgiving action you have chosen to take.
The intention is to thank yourself and focus on how much you deserve to take this action.
This weekend, I have chosen to do three things:
1) go for a walk with a cup of coffee in hand
2) play my new singing bowl for 8 minutes as a way to thank myself, gifting myself clarity, focus, and calm
3) journal all the things that I am grateful for
How do you want to thank yourself during this year’s Thanksgiving?
What actions do you plan on taking to show that you value yourself and create more abundance in your life?
