Does Everything in Your Life Seem Urgent? Learn The Art of Time Management

Have you ever considered why everything you do suddenly seems “urgent”? Is this perception true, or is it something you have created?

Today, I want to share with you the difference between “Urgent” and “Important”.

If everything seems to be urgent in your life, it is time to take a step back and evaluate what is making everything so urgent. Do you ever wonder when all the urgency began? How do you feel about the urgency to get everything done? Do you find yourself spending every second of the day getting things done? What happens when you don’t get everything done? How do you genuinely feel about not getting everything done? And my final question to you: who is judging you?

Does it come as a shock to you that nothing should ever be urgent? The only thing that is considered urgent is an emergency. While everything in life holds importance, focusing on what is most relevant at any given moment ensures we aren’t overwhelmed by urgency.

I learned the difference between “urgent” and “important” from Mr. Tony Robbins — one of my teachers in Robbins-Madanes Training (RMT) — in my coaching training and his Unleash The Power Within (UPW) seminar. Urgent is categorized as an emergency when the situation warrants medical attention and hospitalization, such as an emergency surgery or a near-death situation that requires immediate medical attention. If it’s not an emergency, there is no need for urgency.

Therefore, if every moment of your life requires you to act urgently, then I would be surprised if you told me that you are able to breathe and are breathing freely. If we continue like this for the rest of our lives, then we are shortening our lives and creating much unnecessary anxiety.

What I learned very early on in my training is this: “Do what is most important first!” It has been one of my key takeaways from my coaching practices. It has taught me to take on and execute many tasks efficiently, freely, and with great ease. Carrying with me this lesson has helped me not to question what I do. My intentions are clear. Seeing and doing what is most important first eliminates any concerns for me. The truth is everything in our life is important. On this note, I should emphasize that this is not about prioritization. No one importance should precede another because everything is equally important. However, whatever is most important, we do it first.

An example is if you need to renew your passport knowing that you travel out of the country for work every month, then taking the time to renew your passport would come first.

Another example would be if you need clean clothes the next day simply because you have run out, then make time to do your laundry first.

If everything needs attention all at once, I would question your time management. When someone says, ‘I’ve run out of time,’ it indicates a misaligned schedule. A misaligned schedule leads to imbalance and unmet responsibilities, whether we’re overcommitting or not doing enough. Either way, it throws us off balance, which is the real cause of “running out of time.”

Creating time and space may seem like an art at first. However, with practice, you’ll discover your ability to manage multiple tasks, juggle responsibilities, and free up time in your schedule in ways you never thought possible.

This week, take some time to reflect on how your life looks. Rearrange your tasks and start developing the art of creating time and space in your schedule. Practice focusing on what is most important and relevant first. Over time, you’ll notice that the list of urgent tasks will begin to diminish and may eventually disappear.
