Boost Your Job Searching Confidence With Gratitude Journaling!
Today, I want to talk about the power in Gratitude Journaling.
Gratitude journaling is one of my favourite activities. Truth be told, I love sharing this activity with all my clients.
Whenever I have a new client coming to me with a goal to find a new job or make a career change, it’s almost inevitable for them to question this exercise.
So, here it comes -- the frequently asked question:
“How does gratitude journaling help me find a job?”
Well, a grateful mindset transforms our use of language replacing weak or uncertain words with those more confident, intentional, and impactful. A grateful mindset helps shift our focus to a positive one. Naturally, it helps reduce stress and anxiety.
With a mindset that is calm, and at peace, you’re more likely to navigate the whole job searching process with ease and flow.
Transformation begins immediately in both the mind and body when we choose to cultivate a naturally positive mindset—even before diving into personal and professional development.
And during job searching, it’s easy to get discouraged by setbacks or rejections. In such case, gratitude journaling would help bring your focus on the positives, whether it’s the skills you've developed, the connections you've made, or even the opportunity to learn from interviews.
Gratitude journaling is an excellent way to reflect on your strengths, values, and passions, which will in turn, be reflected in your job interviews. Frequently writing down your thoughts and the things you are grateful for in life increases self-awareness.
Self-awareness helps you express yourself and communicate—clearly and confidently— to the employer your skills, talents, strengths, goals, and passions. In other words, you’ll easily be able to demonstrate to the employer what you bring to the table and why you are a good fit for the role.
Gratitude journaling is a great tool for preparation for behavioural questions in a job interview. As you are reflecting on past events and journaling what you are grateful for, you are likely to write about challenges, successes, and the lessons you’ve learned, allowing you to quickly draw on real-life examples and answer these questions effectively.
Gratitude journaling not only reduces anxiety, but it also helps eliminate imposter syndrome. Writing about your achievements or positive feedback you've received reinforces your skills, strengths, and why you deserve the opportunity.
After all, job interviews can be stressful. However, regular gratitude journaling helps build emotional resilience. Processing your thoughts and emotions before your interviews reduces the feeling of any overwhelm and nervousness.
Ultimately, gratitude journaling helps you reflect on your performance, recognize what went well, and identify areas for improvement—allowing you to grow for future interviews.
Last, but not least, it keeps us grounded. This powerful practice reminds us of our purpose and the bigger picture, helping us stay aligned with our long-term career goals.
Start your gratitude journaling today. If you're a beginner, begin by writing three things you're grateful for each day. These can be big or small. Once this becomes a daily habit for a minimum of five days, consider increasing the number to five things you're grateful for.
If gratitude journaling starts to feel like a chore, bring the list back down to three. Stick to the number you’ve set, and avoid going over that number. You always have the option to adjust the number up or down. The goal is to make gratitude journaling a joyful habit that allows space for self-reflection and growth.
And if you are able to stick to this habit, you will have fulfilled four of the six human needs – certainty, significance, love, and growth – that help you restore and maintain balance in life.
What I’ve shared with you today is only a small sample of my strategies to help you find balance and to maintain balance in life. And there are many levels going much further and deeper in the Six Human Needs Strategy, which you can learn and dive deep into in my coaching sessions with you.
